Being a mum of 2 toddlers sleep deprivation is something I’m very familiar with!
I know first hand the effects that sustained lack of sleep can have on an adult and this morning whilst drinking my fourth cup of coffee, to ensure I got through the day, I started to think about how a school child that didn’t get enough sleep must feel and the effects it must have on them and their education.
Sleep deprivation can have a number of profound effects on a child’s mental, physical and emotional health. It can also significantly impact on children’s behaviour and memory. Undoubtably a child who is sleep deprived is unable to meet their full potential at school, which in turn can affect the rest of their life. After all it is difficult to maintain focus when learning new skills and topics, even when we are at our best!
So I decided to look up techniques that we could implement to help our children get a great nights sleep in order for them to shine!
These my favourite five finds:
1. Routine- try to go to bed and get up at consistent times. It forms a habit for your body
2. Reduce the use of electronics an hour before bed. The blue lights on phones and I pads can be very stimulating and tricks your mind into thinking its time to be awake and active.
3. Set the bedroom environment. Look at external factors that can be managed like noise, temperature and light
4. Read- relaxation techniques before bed have been shown to help you fall asleep easier. Reading for just 10 minutes is a great way to relax the mind
5. Exercise in the afternoon. Even if it is just for a short walk. Fresh air and exercise and the best science backed ways identified to improve sleep quality.
