The Importance of Reading with Children

As I’m sure you are all aware on March the 5th, was the World Book Day. A day when children are encouraged to celebrate their favourite books by dressing up in outfits of their favourite characters.

For a lot of parents having to think and create these outfits can feel like an added chore or expense, but the adorable photos make all the effort worthwhile ! However, in the age of smart phones and tablets, I really feel it’s more important than ever to take pleasure in reading with your child and having a set day to point out the importance of books and reading  can only be a good thing.

Studies show that reading for pleasure makes a big difference to children’s educational performance. In addition, evidence suggests that children who read everyday perform better in tests.

A child’s reading skills are important to their success in school as it allows them to access the whole curriculum and improves their communication and language skills

As parents, we are the most important educators in our child’s life, even more important than the school teachers! Its never too early, or indeed too late, to start reading together.

Here are our top ten benefits of reading with children...

  1. It Exercises the Brain

  2. Fosters Empathy

  3. Enhances Communication

  4. Develops Language and Vocabulary skills

  5. It’s a Bonding Experience and great Quality Time.

  6. Starts Conversations and Questions into Topics and Subjects

  7. Allows for Self-expression

  8. Develops Imagination, Creativity and Listening Skills

  9. Its Calming and Relaxing

  10. Starts to Develop a Love of Books

So, in the words of Dr Suess….

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
