Teaching experience

My name is Amy and I have been a Primary teacher for three years, teaching Year 1, Year 5 and Spanish to KS2. Before I became a teacher, I worked as a learning support assistant and as a tutor, so I have lots of experience working in education. I have taught from Year 1 up to university level across the curriculum; my specialties are English, History and Spanish. My previous school was Queen’s Park Primary school in London; I began there as a trainer teacher and was fortunate to be their languages lead when I left this year. I have worked with a number of different organisations to help improve my class’s access to learning in the wider world; working with Rolls Royce and the Royal Albert Hall to recreate the mechanics of the Cirque du Soleil was a particular highlight, as well as having the opportunity to work with the Floating Classroom and teach Year 5 about the importance of canals.

What I love about teaching

I think being a teacher is the best job in the world. It is such a privilege to be able to help people discover more about a new subject; there is no greater joy than seeing people learn and grow. I love to read and tell stories and hear other people’s stories too, whether creations from their imagination or true stories about their lives. One of the reasons I enjoy teaching history is getting to learn so many new and different stories; every ancient object or city has a tale to tell. Being a primary teacher, I help people learn across the curriculum; I find it much more interesting to teach a variety of subjects. It is important to me that my students understand the reason for their learning and can link it to their own experiences, whether this is through trips, visits, or simply talking about what is important in their own lives. It is amazing to do a job where I get to meet and know so many children and help them find what they enjoy and become the best people they can be.

Fun Fact

A fun fact about me is that I used to work at Hard Rock Café – my favourite part was getting everyone to sing people happy birthday!
